Indexing services
The quote
I charge per indexable page, and my rates vary according to type of book (trade, textbook or scholarly), complexity and depth of the subject, number of words per indexable page, and number of pages available for the index.
For a quote, please send me a general description or an abstract of the book to be indexed, with a sample chapter representative of the content and the estimated number of indexable pages.
The indexing process
Before I being indexing, I will need the following:
- For back-of-book indexes: final pages, in PDF format. Please note that any changes to page numbers after the index has been started will incur extra costs.
- For embedded indexes: normalized manuscript in MS Word.
- Deadline for the index.
- Specifications for the index (publisher style guide or any special requirements)
- Any specific terms or concepts that should be included in the index.
I welcome discussion with you, the author or publisher, both before and during the indexing process. The purpose of an index is to guide the reader of the book to access information, so together with the you, my job is to provide the best possible index within page, time and cost constraints.
The output
On completion of the index, I will provide the index in a word document or RTF file.
Changes or corrections are can be accommodated at this point if time and budget permits.
